Reflection: Rigor Energy Flow in Ecosystems - Section 3: Explore

 

The power of this lesson comes from allowing the students to make the connection between both sets of numbers given by the interactive ("pyramid of numbers" and "pyramid of energy"). The analysis questions included in the guided notes allow students to think deeper than a "recall", and describe their thinking. The connections made help students internalize that ten percent rule and see it as more than a number but rather how it impacts populations. 

Adding "Why" and "How" questions to your lessons opens the door to richer discussions. Instead of just looking for a textual answer, the student has to think about what he/she saw or experienced in order to provide an answer. The answer they come up with usually leads into a second, third  or fourth question. This is at the root of rigorous questioning and an excellent way to help develop critical thinking skills in your students.
