Final Review : Body System Research Projects (Day 5 of 6)
Lesson 6 of 10
Objective: SWBAT instruct their peers in a review session to master the anatomy and physiology associated with their selected body system.
Background: Students have spent the last few days researching and presenting their Body System Research Projects (Day #1 and Day #2) and are now ready to review with small groups to provide details that may have been missed in the original presentations.
Anticipatory Activity: In an attempt to encourage students to conceptualize how body systems integrate to maintain homeostasis, students will be asked to describe homeostasis. Once all students have had the opportunity to record their responses, the class will review in a whole-class discussion that is captured in the video clip below.
Class Review of Homeostasis:
Due to the logistics of having two body systems presented at the same time (Day #1 and Day #2), it is essential that students are provided the opportunity to meet with groups that they missed while they were giving their presentations. Students will break up into small groups and conduct a quick review for their peers to ensure that all students in the class have been able to take notes on all of the nine research topics:
- Nervous System
- Respiratory System
- Skeletal System
- Muscular System
- Digestive System
- Integumentary System
- Excretory System
- Endocrine System
- Circulatory System
Students will participate in a modified jigsaw activity that encourages each of the four original research group members to visit the other research topic groups to gather the information to share with their group.
Students used the Body System Research Project Information Sheet to guide their research and the creation of their Google Drive presentations.
The video clip documents the logistics of preparing the class to use their time most effectively in this review session:
Students were tasked with becoming the "expert" in the body system by listening to their peers' review session. The "expert" will then go back to their original research groups and share the details of the review session to ensure that all group members have a complete set of notes on each of the nine body systems. Due to a high number of student absences and school events, there were a high number of absences so the class needed this extra review day to ensure all students had the opportunity to write notes on all body system topics that were shared in the class. For more details on Student Experts, please view the Teacher Reflection.
Students are informed that they will be able to use their written notes on the student-created assessment that will be administered in a future lesson.
Video clip to demonstrate student review in small groups:
Now that students have presented and reviewed their Body System Research Projects, they will have an opportunity to reflect on their experience of working in a collaborative group. Each group member will have the opportunity to assess their partners based on the following criteria:
- Contribution made by each group member
- Level of effort made by each group member
- Quality of work contributed by each group member
- Overall score 1-10 assigned to each group member
These peer assessments are confidential and will be factored into the students final grade by adding these points to the grade earned by the group as a whole for their Google Drive Presentation and the 3D model. This means that group members are able to earn different grades even though they worked on the project together.
The next lesson will bring this series of lessons to a conclusion with a student-developed assessment.
