Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Classifying Natural Resources - Section 1: Introduction


For this lesson, I chose to use an advance organizer, a graphic organizer that provides a structure for students to build their learning onto.  I did this because my students were going to conducting research about fairly abstract ideas, sometimes on websites above their reading level, and I wanted to make the relationships between the different types of energy sources easily visible.  If I would have allowed them to draw their own concept map, they would have had more freedom of expression, and would likely have discovered some other relationships between energy sources (hydroelectric and tidal power both use water), but would not have come up with the broad categories of renewable and non-renewable energy, a critical concept to this lesson.
