Reflection: Positive Reinforcement How much have you learned? Unit Assessment - Section 2: During the exam


My main desire during an exam is that my students be able to demonstrate everything they've learned about the material covered. Many times, this learning doesn't surface due to reasons like: Not interpreting questions correctly, low self-confidence, nervousness, language difficulties, helplessness, and others. 

For these reasons I always walk around observing students working, and look into their papers for any indication that the student is having difficulties. So many times, I few positive words have helped a student perform better than they would have performed without my approach. Asking a question (without hinting), reminding him/her of a moment in class, pointing out something positive on the exam so far, can really turn things around for a student that seems lost. Sometimes, even a light pat on the back, a gesture, or saying something like "you're doing fine, don't give up now" may really help. I especially monitor my ELL and make sure they understand instructions and the test questions. 

Sometimes a student may repeat the same error throughout the test. I question the student to see if he/she understands there is something wrong, without giving any answers. The mistake may make it difficult for me to interpret the student's thinking. It doesn't necessarily mean he doesn't understand the underlying concept. Questioning the student will reveal this.
