Reflection: Standards Alignment Amazing Animal Camouflage! - Section 2: Engage:

Math + Science = A deeper understanding of how science works.

In the classroom I am constantly working to find ways to increase my students familiarity with the role of mathematics in science. I have heard it said that mathematics is the language of science. It is a tool for communicating findings.

A Framework for K-12 Science Education states:

"Mathematics enables ideas to be expressed in a precise form and enables the identification of new ideas about the physical world."

In this lesson that is exactly the role of math.  My students use graphing to organize their data and communicate their findings. As they collect "worms" they sort and graph their data.  As they are graphing they are quickly able to see which colors present the most and draw conclusions.
