Reflection: Student Grouping Earthquake Inquiry: There's a Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On! - Section 3: Explore

 

Clock Buddies is a great strategy to use for many reasons.  The most important one is for peer collaboration, which is part of the NGSS and the Common Core.  The emphasis is working in teams, since that is a skill the students will need out in the workplace someday.  I also find that when students work in teams they don't just find answers...they discuss answers.  This collaboration then in turn helps the students learn more effectively and with more passion.  Even the reluctant learner listens to the reasons, statements and conversations of another to gain knowledge from them.  Anytime kids get to work with each other it makes the task seem more fun and they are more willing to complete with a positive attitude.  It also motivates them to do well since they don't want to let their teammates down.  I also have them work in teams for a very practical reason--I only have to have half of the resources, such as the books we are using today.  So working in partners just makes sense to me.
