Reflection: Writing Across the Disciplines Plants We Eat - Section 2: Warm-up: Planting the Seeds

When teaching in the content areas, instruction can be enhanced by integrating the ideas throughout the school day.  This increases excitement about the science content.

One of the ways I integrate science content and themes throughout the day's instruction is to reference it in our morning journal question. Every day, my students write a response to a journal question. At this point in the year-- April-- the message is incorporated into a pre-written morning message. Since this unit has a Jack-and-the-Beanstalk theme, the journal question connects to the text by asking, "Would you climb up the bean stalk? Why or why not?"

Morning Message and Journal

In these next two examples, journal #1 and journal #2, students chose to write about this science unit on a "free-writing" morning!
