Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding The Spinal Cord and Neurons - Flipped - Section 2: Explain

The concept of specialized cells is new to my students and most of them have never heard of or seen examples of a neuron prior to this class.  The concept of a neuron is introduced to the students through the flipped notes and then I use a variety of hands on and technology based activities to further explain the structures and the function of neurons.  I use student created video explanations of how neurons work, to provide students with the opportunity to view pictures of neurons and so that they also see/listen to peers use analogies for how neurons function.  I use a large model of a neuron and have students represent the various structures to help them make a personal connection to neurons.  I also use pictures of neurons to help the students visualize the structures we discuss.  These various methods for reviewing neurons provide students with numerous opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of the concept.
