Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Designing a System of Light - Section 5: Elaborate

 

I help my students design solutions based on their scientific investigations and reasoning by asking them questions. But, most importantly I lay the unit out from simple to most complex. The reading and investigations come early in the unit, and they provide the content knowledge that my students need to apply their understanding. This knowledge allow the students to create solutions based on reading and investigating. The must have opportunities to learn before they really begin trying to design solutions. 

After a scenario is presented then the students can begin to create a solution. I give them time to work on their own, time to work with a partner, and last I give the students feedback. The partner talk and evaluation takes place in the lesson. My evaluation (student work) or comments come later. I look at their work at the end of the day, and I post questions on their paper to extend their thinking.  This helps students reach much more complex and thorough designs or solutions.
