Reflection: Conferencing Find the Area of the Model House Day 2 - Section 2: Student Practice

The video, Counting Squares to Find the Area, shows a student grappling with differentiating between area and perimeter. At first, he finds the perimeter of the decomposed squares. Then, I sing the Area Song: To find the area, count the squares! Count the squares! Count the squares! Or multiply the length times width of a polygon. He then realizes that he needs to find the area and begins counting squares. After a while, he comes up with "94."

I then draw a 2 x 3 rectangle so that he could see the relationship between counting the number of squares and multiplying length times width. In this video, Got it!, you'll see him transfer his understanding of the 2 x 3 rectangle to the 16 x 10 rectangle.

Find the Area of the Model House Day 2

Unit 14: Area & Perimeter
Lesson 9 of 19

Objective: SWBAT use smaller rectangles to find the area of a room.

Big Idea: Decomposing is a useful strategy that helps students find the area of larger rectangles.
