Reflection: Lesson Planning Making Inferences From Fossils - Section 1: Warm-up

I often use short videos during the introduction of materials.  Students are really able to latch on to the images and the visual helps them remember the information better.  I love when students realize how much about a topic they don't know - following the reading of the article one student said to me "I think I understand how fossils form but how do they get to the surface if they were so deep underground?" I told her the timing of her question was perfect as the videos will answer that question.  Following the videos she said, "just when I think I understand everything you show me something new!"(referring to the mold and cast fossilization method.)  Sometimes a short, effective video catches attention in a way that reading and/or discussion has not.
