Reflection: Adjustments to Practice The Story of Stuff - Section 4: Elaborate

 

I like to think I am pretty good about "vetting" videos and materials before I share them with my students.  However, there was some information in "The Story of Stuff" that got past me.  While I have used this video in the past, and many other teachers have also recommended its use in the classroom, I did have a parent this year who was unappreciative of the comments the narrator made in regards to President Bush's address to the public shortly after 9/11, in which she mentioned something about the President telling the public to "go shopping".  While I know this was purely an observation regarding the American habits or consumerism and quick disposal of goods, and I also know this was not the President's exact words either in the speech, or in speeches that followed, I can easily see how the student and the parent would have misinterpreted the information, based on how it was presented in the video.  While it was not malicious in nature and the parent was more concerned than upset, I take this very seriously and would not want to give the impression that I am sharing my own (or anyone else's) political beliefs in a science lesson. 

In the future, I would definitely send parents the link to this video so that they can preview it in advance of students' viewing, and I would also request parent permission to let their children watch the video. In any case involving children, I would rather ask for permission than forgiveness!

Objective: SWBAT examine trends of material disposal in the United States and analyze which consumption choices reflect people's lifestyle and culture.

Big Idea: The way we consume and dispose of material goods reflect our culture and way of life. The culture of America is wasteful and we must consider ways to reduce our consumption of material goods in order to sustain life on our planet.
