Reflection: Intrinsic Motivation Can You Judge a Powder by its Color? - Section 4: Connecting the Learning

Students commented that they felt like they were really chemists as they evaluated the different powders. This is great to hear from middle school students.

What I love most about teaching middle school students is their demand for relevance. They keep me on my toes. With each lesson, I ask myself, "How can I connect the big ideas in science to middle school students? How do I make the lesson relevant?"

When students came into the classroom at the beginning of Day 2, they immediately began to work - yes, even before the bell rang. They wanted to know the answer and were demonstrating intrinsic motivation.

Success.
