Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Solution Formation and Qualitative Description - Section 3: Explain

For some reason my students always have a hard time understanding solubility curves.

When I teach them this topic I make sure to go over the axis and what each line means in terms of saturation level of a solute at different temperatures.

In order to help students I always do a bunch of example questions, have students actually draw graphs, and even give students a visual of the process. This movie shows how I explain to students about solubility curves and how I try to help them visualize what it means to dissolve in 100grams of water by drawing on the board.

Despite these different ways of presenting solubility curves I still have many students who are confused on the topic.  I think that for next year I will do one of two things.

  1. I will do a solubility curve lab such as this one, where each group will be assigned a different amount of a solute such as potassium nitrate, and then the whole classes data is pooled to come up with a solubility curve.
  2. I will skip this concept all together and just not teach solubility curves.  I am already having to make decisions in terms of what to discard with NGSS, so if this is not a necessary topic, and I cannot do it justice than I may do better with just not teaching it.

Solution Formation and Qualitative Description

Unit 7: Unit 8: Water Quality
Lesson 2 of 11

Objective: Students will be able to explain what happens to make a solution and be able to describe solutions qualitatively through taking notes, performing practice questions, doing a computer simulation and watching videos.

Big Idea: Solutions are composed of solutes dissolving in a solvent and can be described qualitatively in terms of saturation level, and dilute versus concentrated.
