Reflection: High Quality Task Sources, Sinks and Feedbacks - Section 4: Explain

To successfully execute reading circles in your class where the students are engaged and the discussions are rich you must take some time to prepare them for what they are expected to do.

Since each role has a unique perspective, goal and work out put, take time to go over each role and when the role a) looks like, b) sounds like, c) feels like. In other words,

  • What should I see you doing in that role while reading and summarizing?
  • How will the discussion sound when it is your turn to share your work?
  • What are you thinking about and focusing on mentally while you work and discuss your work?

Also consider each role and which students you want to assign to the roles. Ideally over time students should rotate through all the roles. For the first time through though, help them choose roles, particularly those students who frequently need support.
