Reflection: Don't Be Fuel-ish! - Section 1: Day 1: Engage


I have set up a routine in the class so that everyone has a partner to discuss their learning.  Shoulder partners, or two people sitting next to each other, are either called "peanut butter" or "jelly". Nose partners, or two people sitting across from each other, are called either "chips" or "salsa". Whenever I want the students to Turn and Talk, I will give them think time, and then ask either the peanut butter, jelly chips, or salsa to speak first. I call on the opposite partner next. If I want them to them to craft a collaborative response, I will either play the first few seconds of the "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" song or yell out the word, "Fiesta!" to signify it is time for both to share and/or write.

I usually switch my partners around whenever I move desks to form new table groups, which is approximately twice per quarter. However, I can always move as needed if I see that students are not working productively or trying to hard to "take over the spotlight".

If there are an odd number of kids, I assign at least one to be the "bread" or "guacamole", signifying a group of three.

Objective: SWBAT research types of alternative energy to learn about their supplies, locations, benefits, and drawbacks and argue which alternative energy should be increased worldwide.

Big Idea: Fossil fuel supplies are not indefinite. Society must utilize alternative forms of energy in order to ensure life on our planet.
