Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Learning about Landforms - Section 4: Modeling

 

I used a graphic organizer, called "Finding the Main Topic", for this lesson.  I felt like the children really benefitted from its use.  It helped them see the overall connections to what we are learning.  They were easily able to see the main topic and then see how the other ideas are part of that main concept.  They could visually see that connection between the main idea and the 3 supporting ideas.  It helped them to develop a conceptual understanding.  I felt that even the children who struggle with understanding, were able to complete this task and I feel the organizer was part of the success.  I asked the children after we were done with the activity how the organizer helped them.  It is an esoteric question for the students, but they were still able to formulate some viable ideas.  Click here for one student's answer to the question and here for a different answer.
