Reflection: Accountability Designing a Wind Turbine (Part 2) - Section 4: Conducting Research

An important aspect of engineering is team work. It is vital for students to understand how to work in a team to develop design ideas. This includes listening to others and responding to others appropriately. I promote effective listening and speaking skills by asking students to think about effective speaking. This strategy is called Accountable Talk. I sometimes use sentence stems but in the movie below, I simply have the discussion with the students. Check out our discussion. At the end of the movie you'll see some students practicing what we discussed.

Designing a Wind Turbine (Part 2)

Unit 7: Designing for the Future: Wind Turbine Design
Lesson 2 of 7

Objective: SWBAT conduct research in an effort to determine the best design for a wind turbine blade.

Big Idea: Content is king! Armed with answers to their own questions about wind turbines and content questions, students begin to learn the physics of wind blade design.
