Reflection: Pacing Reaction Rate Experimental Design - Section 6: Debrief


There is a new t-shirt out that claims that 95% of people cannot do my job—I’m a chemistry teacher. While I am not sure if that is true, I do know that when I am out sick or on a conference I have to be strategic about what I expect students to do. A lesson that would require minimal intervention on my part is a good choice.

When I know I will be attending a conference, I hope my students get a substitute teacher who knows chemistry, but often that is not the case. So, I try to leave assignments that I have gone over with students in advance, and that they can do in my absence. I always let them know that I will support them with any problems they had with the work when I return. In this lesson, I set them up with reading questions from the book, and then a more ambitious assignment of designing an experiment.

I know that students will struggle with the second one—but that is ok. When I return they will have questions and they will have begun an assignment, which means we can hit the ground running right when I return.

Objective: Students will be able to design an experiment that investigates how a variable effects the reaction rate of calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid.

Big Idea: Rates of reaction are effected by concentration, surface area, and temperature.
