Reflection: Complex Tasks Writing About Salmon and Dams - Section 2: Independent Writing

Most of my students have lots of experience writing narrative works, but for most students, this is their first experience writing a persuasive paper about a science topic. To help students experience success with this task, I provide a lot of structure and support in the writing process. I have found that the paragraph organizer helps students bridge the gap between notes and a written paragraph by providing them with a clear outline of where to use facts gleaned from research and note-taking. I encourage students to use a minimum of three facts from their research in the paragraph by adding one fact to each detail sentence section.
