Reflection: Shared Expectations True & False Equations (Day 1 of 2) - Section 3: Independent Practice

 

Today is a good day for me to remind students of the Basic Rules for a Discussion:

  1. One person is sharing at a time. 
  2. If you are not sharing you are listening thoughtfully.  
  3. When the person is done sharing their ideas you can offer your feedback.  

A quick reminder as they begin to work together will help my students attend to the mathematical practice of constructing arguments and critiquing reasoning (MP3)

To add a tangible element to this reminder, I like to ask my students that they should pick one interesting idea that the person they are visiting came up with, write it down, and share it with your original partner when you get back together. 

At the end of the lesson, I asked students to share some of these ideas as a demonstration of the creativity demonstrated during the lesson. I like to use opportunities like this to help my students recognize how much they can learn from each other.
