Reflection: Continuous Assessment Particles of Matter - Section 3: Active Engagement

 

Using a foldable as an assessment is an easy, yet very informative, strategy.  As you saw in the video, students must grapple with information and categorize that information. They are able to revise their thinking, and deepen meaning. After the foldable (flap book) is created, it then becomes a reference tool during the rest of the unit. 

As the students work, I am able to monitor their thinking and do some "in the moment" teaching. So, the assessment is also a learning opportunity.

Big Idea: This lesson integrates movement, reading, categorizing, and group conversation to help students understand how to organize objects.
