Reflection: Quiet Literacy: It’s all about the spot - Section 3: Closing

 

I did this lesson on the first day of school to kick off Reader's Workshop and get the students excited about having choice and having a positive attitude during Independent Reading time. The lesson went well and the students seemed to pick up on the routine quickly. Most of the students followed directions well. A few were still moving around after countdown, which is typical the first few days, but I will be more strict about movement as time passes. It will take some time for the students to get used to the idea of zero talking and no moving around the room after countdown happens. However, I will continue to reiterate the importance of using the prep time to gather materials and take care of their needs so that they will be able to focus on their reading for an extended amount of time. Since it is the first day, we only read for 10 minutes.  Later in the week, we will work on building the students' stamina by increasing our reading time by 5 minutes each day until reaching our ultimate goal of 40 minutes of uninterrupted time. When we gathered at the end to discuss our results, students were very open and honest about what went well and what could be better. They knew that they needed to sit farther apart so they are not distracted. They knew that there shouldn't be any whispering. They knew that no one should be getting up out of their spots. We discussed the positives also, like how well they did with choosing books and finding comfortable spots to read. Tomorrow, I will review the routines and highlight the positives again.
