Reflection: Staircase of Complexity Ocean Motion.....The Science Behind the Wave - Section 3: Explore

Inquiry teaching and learning falls upon a continuum.  At one end you have inquiry that is very teacher directed and meticulously guided.. progressing to independent student guided inquiry.

The goal is to reach the independent inquiry but, at times, it is necessary to teach all different forms of inquiry. In some respects, it is almost a cycle itself.  In order for students to reach the level of guiding their own questioning, learning and discovering in the learning process, teachers must give them the tools to accomplish this.

For this reason, it is necessary to begin new concepts with directed and guided lessons. Progressively moving towards releasing the learning and allowing students to move towards that independent state of discovery.

Many of my lessons are designed to do this.  I begin with guided lessons that provide background knowledge that builds and scaffolds the learning.  As each lesson adds a bit more new information, it also steps back a bit and allows for more freedom in directing the learning of the students.
