Reflection: Shared Expectations Insolation Factors - Section 4: Practice


For anyone reading this who has seen a lot of my lessons, so many of them have a significant practice component. I truly and fundamentally believe, for a variety of reasons, that students both need and benefit from this time. 

Primarily, there's the research on brain chemistry that states that students generally need practice, or an applicable task (like a lab) to transfer information from their short to long-term memories. I think the best way to cement this information from "oh...when did we learn that?" to "I remember that from 3 weeks ago" is to give them multiple opportunities to apply their knowledge. I also generally find it applicable to do this in the context of the Regents examinations themselves. I don't have to make up images, or type out lengthy text passages that I dream up - I can just go directly to the assessments and get the questions I need. This also helps because I know that the Regents exams generally test a lot of the same material in very similar ways, and my practice automatically, by using the actual exam questions, matches the rigor level of the examination itself. 

Just like any assessment, there are a variety of easy, medium, and hard questions in both multiple-choice and free response formats, so I try my best to provide students with both of those question types with a range of difficulty levels. I really do think it helps their learning, and I try a variety of strategies to make it more fun and engaging for them. 

As a final suggestion, I would highly recommend this website for easy access and pre-sorted Regents-based questions. Even if you aren't a teacher in New York State, the Regents questions are generally well done and really get at a diversity of material in the earth sciences. Last time I signed up (this past summer), it was also in the range of $20-40 for the entire year - well worth every penny!

Unit 4: The Sun & Insolation

Objective: SWBAT identify texture, color, time of day, and atmospheric particles as factors that affect the intensity of insolation

Big Idea: Dark-colored and fought surface objects absorb the most insolation, while light-colored and smooth surfaces are better at reflecting insolation. This (and a few other minor variables) affect how much insolation an area receives
