Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Adding and Subtracting Decimals - Section 4: Estimating

 

For this section, I created power point slides with addition and subtraction problems.  I showed a slide for about 7 seconds and had students write down their estimate.  At first, students complained that it wasn’t enough time but I told students that the point was to make an estimate, not solve the problem.  I emphasized that students could not write down the problem, only their estimate.  Then I would put the packet under the document camera and have students share out their estimates.  Students had different estimations, some more exact than others.  I wanted students to hear different options and strategies.
