Reflection: Real World Applications Soil Secrets-Earth Erodes! - Section 3: Small Group Instruction

Who knew?!?!  Engineering and design thinking is not only for engineers and designers.  There is an exciting trend in education where teachers pose problems and students become the problem solvers.  While this real world application can create an uncomfortable feeling in some (especially some parents! “What?  Where are the worksheets?!?!”), the process of a lesson where students observe, collaborate, think, experiment, fail, try again, adjust,’s all part of a educational and professional world that are students are about to enter.   In this lesson, the problem became the eroding structure.  As stewards of the Earth, how will they be able to see erosion as a problem that they help fix?  Teaching a learning process that encourages action is key.  There will always be the student that complains, “I’m only one person so I can’t do anything!”.  By giving real life examples of a problem, along with tangible solutions, we can model the process of making a difference to the Earth, one piece of dirt at a time.
