Reflection: High Quality Task Fossils - Section 2: Warm Up

To get the most out of lessons, it helps to have something really interesting in the introduction or warm up. The fossils I used for this came from a local rock store and cost me about $4 for a mixed bag. I gave each group of 2-3 students about 5 fossils- that was it! This lesson was really successful because I started with the fossil exploration - actually, it was so successful that after ten minutes I asked my class who wanted to continue to explore their fossils and every hand went up!!! So, I extended the warm up to an entire lesson - and every student was engaged the whole time! Then, I picked up the second day with the Activity section. Watch as some of the students talk about what they saw on their plate of fossils in this video: Fossil Data Recording

Oh, and one other thing. You never know what first graders are actually up to. After the entire lesson, I watched my videos and looked closely at their journals and realized that there were additional shark teeth...that came from our shark pit on the playground! (We live near the beach, so the students can 'dig' up shark teeth during recess). One of my little students had taken them from his pocket and put them on some of the plates - and I didn't notice!!!! Of course, I addressed this with them the next day and explained that somehow some non-fossilized, but still very nice shark teeth, had gotten into our exploration...and I had absolutely no clue how it had happened...hmmmm...;)
