Reflection: Joy Solve and Interpret Division Problems - Section 3: Partner Practice

Each year, I update my materials.  One quick change I make is with the names of word problems.  This is a quick and easy way to create joy and student engagement.  I'll change names in problems to include:

  • student names
  • teacher names
  • characters from popular books (Katniss, Tris, etc.)
  • characters from books the kids are reading in literature class
  • characters from popular TV shows (having a teenage son at home helps me immensely with this!)
  • popular musicians
  • sports figures who are currently in the news
  • historical figures from the unit kids are working on in history class
  • a fictitious character who makes an appearance all year long (last year, we named him Bobo,a and he loved trapezoids)
