Reflection: Performance Tasks Outdoor and Hands-on: An Assessment (Day 1) - Section 1: Launch

 

I like to use Group Assessments, but I know that there are Pros and Cons to using this approach. I remind myself of them every time I use one so that I make sure that I am providing an appropriate (fair and rigorous) opportunity for my students to demonstrate their understanding. Here are some of the things I thought about today:

Pros: Is relatively straight forward and encourages collaboration because the group either "swims or sinks" together. Also, the likelihood of copying decreases. 

Cons: High performing students may feel at a disadvantage. Weaker students may simply tag along and receive a "false" grade. I chose the pairs very carefully to minimize this possibility. Individual mastery is assessed in the second part of the assessment.

Unit 10: Volumes of Cylinders, Cones, and Spheres
Lesson 6 of 7

Objective: SWBAT demonstrate that they've learned how to use volume formulas for cones, cylinders and spheres.

Big Idea: Equipped with calculators and measuring tape, students calculate volumes of various objects on the school premises.
