Reflection: Trust and Respect Speaking of Spheres (Day 1) - Section 1: Launch

 

I learned to be vigilant and quite sensitive to put downs that can occur during classroom discourse. I try hard to foment a classroom culture of camaraderie and respect from the very beginning. Past experiences as a teacher and as a student have taught me that my role in orchestrating classroom discourse is not only to monitor students' participation, but to be aware of how students respond to one another. Put-downs of any sort, including those that are passed off as humor, should be tactfully confronted and followed up privately if necessary. Publicly dealing with inappropriate student interaction when it happens, in a calm manner, without embarrassing anyone, has worked well for me.
