Reflection: Complex Tasks Patterns of the Moon - Section 3: Explore

Today's lesson requires students to understand and explain very complex ideas: the moon phases, how the moon appears to change each night, and how the revolution of the moon around the Earth and the positioning of the sun causes these apparent changes.

To support students as they preserve and grapple with these complex ideas, I provide students with two copies of the this Main Idea Wheel Graphic Organizer.

This graphic organizer helps support students in several ways:

  • Helps students categorize information in order to make sense of complicated ideas
  • Provides structure for note-taking
  • Scaffolds a complex task (such as documenting the phases of the moon)
  • Provides students with an attainable goal (8 facts) during the research process
