Reflection: Performance Tasks Presenting the Patterns: Sharing our Products - Section 1: Instructional Notes

Teachers have many options when it comes to providing unit assessments.  I like preassessments because they inform my instruction throughout a unit.  However, I prefer performance-based assessments in science at the end of a unit.  I find that my lower ability readers/writers and students with attention difficulties tend to struggle with paper tasks, even when the problems are read aloud and presented in chunks.

For this unit, the standard was:

1-ESS1-1. Use observations of the sun, moon, and stars to describe patterns that can be predicted.

The performance task of an informational poster meets this standard, as it requires students to describe the pattern through writing and drawing.
