Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Make Noise - Section 3: Explore


I learned that the students must hold the end of the tuning fork. If they hold the fork parts they restrict the sound by stopping the vibrations: exploration. You can see in the video how the students recognize why the boy in the blue cannot hear the sounds. They even show him how to properly hold the tuning fork. Many lessons allowing them to help each other has taught the students to work together and support each other through investigations. 

 I also learned that glass absorbs the vibrations and the students do not get to see the water move. So, here is my video showing this: stopping vibrations with glass. I also learned that the glasses sing best with crystal glasses, since real glass absorbs vibrations when rubbed.

Objective: SWBAT draw the conclusion that vibrations make sound.

Big Idea: Allow students to investigate sound by giving students tongs, a mallet, water, and a computer. Yes, this one is fun!
