Reflection: Students with Disabilities Static Cling - Section 3: Writing to Explain

Some students with special needs might find the writing portion to be difficult. They can draw and create diagrams if need be. Drawings do not always explain the thinking or understanding. I will ask for diagrams, but then I call on each one to come and discuss with em their thinking. I want to see if they are able to make connections to the other lessons. I can also prompt their thinking and help them build these connections through conversation. With the new Common Core standards, speaking and listening are a big part of learning. This helps them build these conversational skills and also gives them confidence to participate when we bring up this concept for review at another time.

Static Cling

Unit 3: Magnets, Energy and Assessment
Lesson 3 of 9

Objective: SWBAT demonstrate and explain what occurs when a positive charge meets a negative charge.

Big Idea: To explore the idea of positive and negative charges, students can explore static electricity. To begin this exploration student will use balloons and the wall that many of them might have seen, but will now have to explain how it works scientifically.
