Reflection: Lesson Planning Order of Operations with Grouping Symbols - Section 2: Intro to New Material


I do not teach students PEMDAS or ‘Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally’ when we are learning order of operations.  Many of my students come to me having heard one or both of these mnemonic devices in previous grades.  I tell them that it's okay to use to help you remember the general order of steps to follow, but if you don't really understand what's happening, then you may make a mistake.  

I feel that students get confused later in math when suddenly P/"Please" means braces, brackets, radicals, absolute value symbols, etc.  Instead, I teach that grouping symbols are evaluated in the first step.

PEMDAS and 'Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally' can also lead students to misunderstand the order in which the operations are performed.  MD or My Dear, for example, tends to make students think that multiplication happens before division.  This isn't always true.
