Reflection: Designing an Earthquake Resistant Structure - Section 2: Research

I felt this step was important because I wanted to make sure my instruction includes all the phases of the Engineering Design Process.  This research reinforced the concept that engineers are constantly building off of the ideas and designs of others.  I could have just let them start building, but it would have made what they were doing less relevant to the real world.  The worksheet I had them completing not only asks what other engineers have done before, but also has them explicitly state which idea they will use when they start building their design.

It turns out that some of my students, my 3rd graders in particular, also really need the media literacy practice.
