Reflection: Connection to Prior Knowledge Art For Cell - Section 4: Guided Practice - Art For Cell

Why take instruction time to create a work of art in Biology?  There are few reasons art is crucial for my students understanding of our science curriculum:

  1. The NGSS Science and Engineering Practice #2 encourages all students to create and use models to further their understanding of scientific content.
  2. Differentiates instruction so the students who are visual learners in class are able to "see" the content come to life through their artistic creation.
  3. Art in Biology provides an opportunity for students who are not super fans of science to shine by expressing themselves through their art work.  My "artsy" students relish the opportunity to draw and create in Biology.

So if possible, take the time to "create" across the curriculum and use art as a strategy to bring Biology to life!

Art For Cell

Unit 5: Cell Biology - An Out Of This Cell Experience
Lesson 2 of 7

Objective: SWBAT identify the structure and function of eukaryotic cell organelles through the creation of an illustrated model.

Big Idea: Time for your inner-artist to shine! Students will learn all about cell organelles and design a colorful model to represent their understanding of how all of the parts work together to reach homeostasis.
