Reflection: Writing Across the Disciplines Thomas Edison: What Did He Teach Us? - Section 4: Closing and Assessment

 

I am sure, if you have had similar experiences as me, you have had to "drop" or "move" science off of you plate in the past to make room for all of the other areas of curriculum that we are required to cover. Today's lesson is a great example that "science" can happen during your "reading block" or during "writing workshop."  

The more we creatively think about what the standards are asking of us and of our students, it is possible to find breathing room in our plan books, make lessons relevant and rigorous, and cover more standards than we may have in the past. 

My lesson today touched on, and practiced, 21 standards in an hour's time.  When you really think about that, the more we work to embed skills from every curricular area throughout our day, the more the students understand their relevance and the more we can open up our day to real world learning.

Big Idea: Reading informational text, making sense of it, and connecting learning gleaned from the information is heavy duty for third graders. This lesson explores a step by step strategy to combine science, reading, and writing.
