Reflection: Real World Applications Writing an Abstract - Section 2: Explain

I make it a point to help my students understand the significance of what we do in the classroom and how it can translate to coursework or careers beyond my classroom.  This is why I provide my students with abstract examples from professional journals.  While I know that the odds of each of my students writing abstracts as professionals is low, I want my students to be familiar with the purpose of an abstract and to understand that the tasks that they complete in my classroom are designed to help them better understand the process of science.  I also explain to my students that reading an abstract can help them determine whether or not that specific paper will be helpful to them when they are writing a research paper.
