Reflection: Discourse and Questioning Hydrosphere: The Water Cycle Day 1 - Section 2: Focus


To develop a classroom culture where students engage in meaningful and productive scientific discourse with peers, I set clear turn and talk expectations (students share their ideas, listen to others, include others, and are on topic) and I utilize this strategy during every lesson in every subject every day. Students know that engaging in discourse with other students is part of their learning process and they come to expect it. 

What I appreciate most about turn and talk moments is that they encourage students to be attentive listeners, they provide the opportunity for students to articulate science concepts using their own words, and they allow students a second chance to hear key information, just in case the missed it the first time around. 

I also have a money reward system in my classroom. Students earn "Loraxbucks" for turning in their homework. Then, students can buy special privileges in the classroom, such as a wiggle cushion or sit with a friend. Each day, I'll often pick one student to be "IT." During turn and talk moments, I ask this student to specifically watch for a student sharing their ideas, listening to others, including others, and on topic. When ready, the student who is "IT," then celebrates a student for meeting expectations, gives him/her an extra $10 bill in "Loraxbucks," and the celebrated student is the new "IT." In the course of a day 2-4 students are celebrated. Students LOVE being recognized by their classmates (even more than they love extra classroom money).

Objective: SWBAT create and investigate physical models to describe the process of condensation in the water cycle.

Big Idea: In this lesson, students explore the process of condensation by completing two investigations. Students will then write and share scientific explanations of condensation by constructing evidence-based arguments.
