Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Connecting Molecular Motion to Thermometers - Section 3: Experimenting with Thermometers

 

Establishing our students' confidence and abilities to develop an investigation is an importance part of developing scientifically literate citizens.  I, however, did not think that I wanted to focus on having kids develop their own investigation because their conceptual understanding needed further development.  

My goal in this lesson is to establish a deeper understanding of molecular motion affecting the volume of liquids, and then applying that understanding to explain how thermometers work.  There will be many opportunities for students to establish their ability to plan and carry out investigations, so I used the procedural worksheet from ACS.  As teachers, you should analyze the needs of your students and decide if it is appropriate to integrate a certain practice or not.
