Reflection: Complex Tasks Bonding Report - Section 2: Do Now/Activator

 

It is really interesting to discuss teaching with other teachers. Lately, the Common Core has challenged ELA teachers to teach nonfiction texts. In our school, our principal asks us to teach math in every subject—to embed it into our course. Science teachers are asked to teach reading and writing. While there are some enthusiastic responses to these challenges, many teachers balk at the idea of teaching something that is not in their curriculum. I have so much science teaching to do, says the argument, that I do not have time to teach math.

Therein lays a real challenge. As a science educator, I cannot divorce reading, writing, and math from my content—they are my content. I understand that in the strictest sense I have science content to cover, and there is already a tremendous challenge to cover these topics in the amount of time I have to do it. However, I also recognize that teaching writing and science go hand in hand. Writing is the recording of ideas. An author once noted that if you want to really know something, write about it. My students’ drafts indicate a vague understanding of their science content. The use of transitions to link ideas is a very challenging writing task for the beginning writer, but it is made more so when the ideas are not fully fleshed out.

By focusing on writing in the science classroom, I can help my students become better thinkers, better communicators, and I can help them become smarter about the content that drives my chemistry course.

Bonding Report

Unit 4: Compounds
Lesson 7 of 8

Objective: Students will be able to write a research report that compares and contrasts a particular ionic compound and a particular molecular compound.

Big Idea: Ionic and molecular compounds each have their own naming systems and their bonds are created differently. Writing is an important part of the scientific process.
