Reflection: Connection to Prior Knowledge The Skeletal System - Section 2: Guided Practice

 

As much as possible I try to make connections between words that students know and experiences they share and the bones that students are studying. Doing so helps students build personal connections to their learning and ground their new knowledge in context of what they already know and understand. Some examples that I use in this lesson are discussing the humerus and funny bone, connecting vertebrae to our study on invertebrate insects, discussing the board game Cranium, and talking about carpal tunnel syndrome.

Big Idea: The skeletal system provides the human body with structure and aids in movement. Scientists use common names for human bones.
