Reflection: Rigor What Can Fossils Teach Us? - Section 3: Active Engagement

Navigating difficult text is important for young scientists. The informational reading strategies are strong here. For a teacher, this is a real world way to introduce and develop nonfiction reading strategies. My students needed to find key vocabulary words that would help them create an understanding of text and make meaning of the information in this text. I believe that offering students information just above their level at the right time and in the right way, creates a safe environment to grow conceptually, as well as in ability.

What Can Fossils Teach Us?

Unit 4: Ecosystems and Biological Evolution
Lesson 7 of 7

Objective: Students will be able to read informational text about several fossils and determine the possible "story" behind their lives long ago.

Big Idea: Time is a challenging concept for third graders. Understanding that change happens over many, many years, and tells a story of life long ago is abstract. The design of this lesson allows students to delve more deeply into these concepts.
