Reflection: Modeling Reading To Learn: Dinosaurs Among Us - Section 2: Activity

It is a good idea to have picture books for teens for the students to reference and model their book after.  Some suggestions that show how the picture book format is used for learning are:

  • The Matchbook Diary by Paul Fleischman
  • The Worst of Friends: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and the True Story of an American Feud by Suzanne Jurmain
  • All My Friends Are Dead by Avery Monsen

Any local librarian can offer more suggestions.  You want to have enough of a variety to provide students with options but not so many that students can keep reading the book so it becomes more of a distraction rather than a resource.

Reading To Learn: Dinosaurs Among Us

Unit 6: Evidence of Common Ancestry
Lesson 2 of 12

Objective: SWBAT create a picture book based on a scientific article that introduces students to the idea that birds are modern day dinosaurs.

Big Idea: Reading to learn is tough but that does not mean it can't be fun! Students work to "translate" a scientific article from a renowned paleontologist into "everyday speak" that any young person can understand without losing the article's integrity.
