Reflection: Student Self-Assessment Do You Smell That?-Using Our Sense of Smell - Section 3: Discussion


Helping students to understand what they are learning and assess their understanding is a challenging task at the kindergarten level.  How do you really help a student who is five or six years old understand how much he or she has learned?  As a teacher, there are times that I really struggle to help my students assess their learning and I am constantly looking for ways to help students become more aware of their growth.  Sometimes however, this awareness occurs with little assistance from me.

For each of the five senses units, the students helped me create a web, in which I record their knowledge about a specific web.  We were doing the same thing for this lesson and a student raised his hand and said, "Mrs. Baumann, look at our chart now compared to when we started doing five senses.  We put a lot more down.  I think we have learned a lot!"

His observation was completely accurate and it allowed me to have a great discussion with the students about how they had been applying what they learned about the other senses to their sense of smell.  This didn't require a formal assessment and looking at a colorful graph of growth.  The students were able to say, "Gee, look at that poster.  We have learned a lot."

Sometimes, we try so hard to find the answers, but maybe it is better if we just step back and let the students find the answers themselves.
