Reflection: Lesson Planning Delightful Decimals - Section 2: Warmup


When I started doing number talks I was making a lot of decisions "on the fly". Although some of the decisions made this way are great I really wanted to find a way to make a more focused examination and not leave some of the connections I wanted students to make up to chance. I really wanted to be more intentional in my choices. The Planning Template I created is modified from one I found in the book Intentional Talk: How to Structure and Lead Productive Mathematical Discussions by Kazemi & Hintz. 

It helps the teacher pinpoint the most useful strategies to compare. After predicting and modeling the strategies I expected to emerge I could choose a comparison that would most likely help students uncover the important math concepts and connections.

Unit 1: Order of operations & Number properties
Lesson 9 of 9

Objective: SWBAT apply mental math strategies and properties of addition to decimal addition. SWBAT compare strategies in order to better distinguish the properties of addition.

Big Idea: Students begin to use mental math to gain better decimal number sense.
