Reflection: Coherence Cell Division (Day 2) - Section 2: Hook

Using exit tickets from previous lessons to hook students into the lesson the next day often provides rich opportunities for discussion. In this case, it was interesting to me that three "schools of thought" were evidenced in the exit tickets from Day 1: Chemotherapy:

  1. Stops mitosis.
  2. Slows mitosis down.
  3. Kills the cancerous cells.

When we discussed this in class, my interventions were aimed at asking the students to probe further into how would the therapy "know" to interact only with cancerous cells. We had a rather lively discussion that then tied in the learning from the lessons on how cells transport materials. This strategic conversation made students examine their understanding in light of new evidence (SP 7: Engaging in Argument from Evidence), and reinforced the concepts already taught.
