Reflection: Writing Across the Disciplines Taste Test...Gathering Data - Section 3: Explore

Any time I have the opportunity to weave other curriculum areas into my teaching of science, I grab it.  This lesson offered the perfect chance to bring in descriptive words and strong sentences. This is a great way to build vocabulary that can strengthen my science lessons.  The Farmer In the Dell, strategy, is a low impact in that it is very non-threatening to all students. It is not a new strategy, but one that was created many years ago by the McCrackens. This format is just tweaked a bit.

It is fun to think of all the words to describe what you are learning about.  There is no right or wrong, which offers all the students the ability to practice and play with words.

It is an especially strong activity for ELL and lower level students who are still working through understanding language and sentence structure.  There cannot be a better way to learn new concepts and vocabulary than with science which is so engaging anyway!!
